Chamber Encourages Residents to Apply for Jobs at Career Fair & with Advertising Campaign

The St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Human Resource Management Association of Northwest Missouri, will host a Career Fair on Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2022, at Stoney Creek Hotel & Conference Center, 1201 N. Woodbine Road from 3 to 6 p.m. Nearly 40 Chamber member businesses are scheduled to be in attendance.

“Our local businesses need employees now more than ever, so it’s a perfect time for the Chamber to host a career fair,” said Natalie Redmond, President and CEO of the St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce.

The Chamber also is currently running an advertising campaign, including billboards, encouraging residents to “Get to Work” and visit its job website jobs.saintjoseph.com.

In June, the preliminary unemployment rate was 2.2 percent in St. Joseph. The preliminary July rate for Missouri is 2.5 percent, the lowest-recorded, seasonally-adjusted rate since the data series began in 1976, according to the Department of Higher Education and Workforce Development and News-Press NOW.

“When you see unemployment rates low, you might think that everyone is working, but that’s not necessarily the case,” Redmond said. “When people stop looking for jobs, they are no longer counted in the unemployment rate statistics. For St. Joseph, data shows about 1,300 people as unemployed, but we know there are more who may be available to work.”

On the Chamber’s jobs board alone there are more than 600 open positions, and not all of St. Joseph’s companies post jobs on the site. It’s estimated there are more than 1,000 positions open in St. Joseph at the moment. The Career Fair will feature jobs in a variety of settings from administrative in an office environment to hands-on technical work in manufacturing companies. Officials will be available to address questions about jobs such as skill sets required, hours, pay, etc.
